The sign says paraphrased”God calls us to be faithful, not successful”
It is good to be successful, but success is not guaranteed.
Ecclesiastes 9:11 I realized another thing, that in this world fast runners do not always win the races, and the brave do not always win the battles. The wise do not always earn a living, intelligent people do not always get rich, and capable people do not always rise to high positions. Bad luck happens to everyone.
It is very easy to work your tail off in education and become very smart, but unable to find a good job. The opportunity just isn’t there always. For this, I tell people to not put their life off until after graduation or until they get a job. A job is not a sure thing. Only 30% of the US population works now compared with 35% in 1998. Society will tell you that not getting a job calls you a failure. But God doesn’t think of any of us as a failure.
God sees the good in you and calls you to bigger things than just working. Yes, educate yourself always, work a moral job and live a frugal life, so you can help the poor more. But if you are saddled with student loans and can’t get a job, this does not make you a failure. Instead focus on being good and loving to all. Accept humble tasks and do good to all those around you. Do good deeds when you can. God doesn’t expect for you to give 50% of your income if you can barely make ends meet.
Everyone is called to be a different part of Christ. Some are called to be clergy. Many are called to do church without walls and evangelize. Some are supported by the church and do missions. Some are helped by the church and raise a family. Some do loving care in some corner of the Earth to just a few or even one. Your servitude in Jesus is more important than if you are stacking bills.
I think the church sign is right. Faithfulness is required. Success is not.
