Does the familiar become boring? Must we seek out the strange and exotic as better?

Some people think Christianity is boring. They think all it does is prevent you from doing the fun sins you like. How can it even be right if the guy preaching at your church doesn’t even have a real education? Why should you listen to a humble dude tell you how it is? He lives in this same concrete jungle. He can’t know anything, right?

Mark 6:1 (GNT) Jesus left that place and went back to his hometown followed by his disciples. 2 On the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue. Many people were there; and when they heard him, they were all amazed. “Where did he get all this?” they asked. “What wisdom is this that has been given him? How does he perform miracles? 3 Isn’t he the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon? Aren’t his sisters living here?” And so they rejected him. 4 Jesus said to them, “Prophets are respected everywhere except in their own hometown and by their relatives and their family.” 5 He was not able to perform any miracles there, except that he placed his hands on a few sick people and healed them. 6 He was greatly surprised, because the people did not have faith.

What are the thoughts of these guys,”Whoa! Who’s preaching in the synagogue?!? He seems to really be saying new things. Wait… It’s just Jesus. He lives down the road from me. I know him my whole life. He doesn’t have two bits to scrape together. If he knew anything from his carpentry business, he wouldn’t have been doing so many free jobs for everyone. Doesn’t he know everyone just uses him for his work? Look, if I want to learn wisdom, I want to learn from someone who has a lick of sense.”

Does plain old Jesus still bore some people? Do you think,”Maaaaan, church is boorhooorring. I can’t wait to get home and play Xbox.” It’s Jesus, telling you the right way to live. What if you don’t want to be told how to live? If you think Jesus is boring though, you don’t know the same God I do.

*Psalm 139:14 (GNT) “I praise you because you are to be feared; all you do is strange and wonderful. I know it with all my heart.”

If there is one thing to be said about God is that though there may several different ways we could see of doing a miracle, God delights in doing them in creative ways:

Take down an enemy city? Oh march around it for seven days and then blow a trumpet. The walls of Jericho will fall.

Fight an enemy army without enough troops? God says send some more troops home. God wins the war by confusing the enemy troops.

Prophet rebelling? Have his donkey rebel against him by talking.

A certain person going to get healed of a skin disease? He’s told to dip himself in a river.

It goes on and on. God doesn’t just do stuff without creativity. Heaven will be the same. All the things you could ask for and more would be there if God didn’t know what you wanted even more. Yes, more than any fantasy you could wish for, Heaven will be better. God does stuff in strange and wonderful ways. What an awesome God we have. Do not think of him as plain and run off to idols like some did. Stick with this guy forever. He loves you.
