Proverbs 15:28 Good people think before they answer. Evil people have a quick reply, but it causes trouble.
A witty and clean response is good humor. However, some inexperienced people don’t get it and just say something random. Throw in the fact that a lot of people don’t censor themselves and you have people who think they’re witty, but they’re actually just saying the first thing that pops into their head.
Another angle to this proverb is that some people search for the correct and tactful thing to say. Someone who doesn’t care about others’ feelings will just say whatever they feel like or actually just tell a lie on the spot.
Maybe we as a culture should place more respect on people who sit there and think before a response? Most people aren’t blessed with a quick wit anyway. And we’re always compared to the humor you might get from a sit com which seems off the cuff, but is pre meditated jokes. This is just some stuff to think about.
Judges 6:11 Then the Lord’s angel came to the village of Ophrah and sat under the oak tree that belonged to Joash, a man of the clan of Abiezer. His son Gideon was threshing some wheat secretly in a wine press, so that the Midianites would not see him. 12 The Lord’s angel appeared to him there and said, “The Lord is with you, brave and mighty man!”
The Judges is a book of super heroes that God helped his people in times of invasions before the days of kings. Gideon here was going to free the Israelites from oppression of occupying invaders. But that was only the future known by God. In the wine press at that very moment, he was trying to hide some food he was preparing from the bad guys. So it is funny that the LORD’s Angel declared,”The Lord is with you, brave and mighty man!” at a time when he was hiding.
We were driving home from vacation, my mom and I. We kept remarking on how nice the clouds and mountains were. One mountain was called canoe mountain because it was shaped like the bottom of a canoe. Lots of clouds were nice. Then my mom remarked, look at that cloud, it looks like someone just took a paint brush and slapped paint across the sky. I jested, “Maybe God felt lazy.” I didn’t mean it for a second, it was just a joke. But God, seemingly wanting to outclass my joke gave us a great display after that.
Clouds rolled in that looked like small bubbles, maybe thousands of them, forming shapes. But what was really astounding is that the sun began to set, and the bottom clouds turned golden and the top ones florescent pink. I never saw the sky light up this amazing before. It was like God really wanted to give a show.
I think on times like this and just how close and friendly you can get with God. He knew I wasn’t being offensive by calling him lazy in a joke. But he likes jokes and then went all out extreme showing of art in the sky afterwards. Just like two guys having a friendship, God is friends with me. Be friends with God, you never know what amazing things you’ll see with him.
But yeah, you can start with appreciating beauty in nature. There’s a lot of beauty to be seen just looking at plants, trees and flowers. Or looking to the sky where the stars, moon, planets and clouds are. And there’s nothing wrong with an extra prayer when you see a shooting star or rainbow.
Oh and the cloud that started out like a lazy streak? Yah, when the sun was setting, it looked like a nebulous mountain of purple majesty. God has a real good sense of humor. It is all the more reason to love him.
Please don’t go calling God names hoping he’ll prove you wrong and go in the opposite direction. This is not what this was. You can’t force the hand of God, but you can be the guy’s friend and see awesomeness from time to time.
